Aleena Reitsma

Aleena Reitsma, M.S.W., J.D., completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta. Thereafter, she moved to Toronto to undertake a joint Masters of Social Work (MSW) and Juris Doctor (JD).  Aleena articled with the Ministry of the Attorney General in Toronto, and then served as a Legal Fellow and Assistant Field Officer with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Ghana (UNHCR).  Following her return to Canada, Aleena worked with Legal Aid Saskatchewan (LAS) in Meadow Lake where she indicates she gained a true appreciation for the importance of the Charter.

Aleena brings a wealth of experience and an abundance of enthusiasm to her position with the Centre. She looks forward to engaging with the faculty, the public, and to coordinating the Centre’s many education projects.

Martin Gotthelf

Staff Members

Martin Gotthelf, PCP, holds diplomas in Management Studies from Grant MacEwan College (as it then was), Payroll Administrator from the Academy of Learning, is bilingual (English/French), and has worked in several administrative roles in the course of his career (e.g. Student Systems Manager, Office of the Registrar, Grant MacEwan University).

Patricia Paradis

Patricia Paradis, LLB, M.Ed. CMed., manages the Centre’s research and public education mandates – a role she assumed in February 2010. In her capacity, she edits two constitutional journals and manages research projects, public events, academic conferences and symposia. 

Patricia has had a lengthy career as a human rights educator and advisor – she has taught “Human Rights Law in /Canada” as a sessional instructor in the Faculty for the past 23 years. Prior to joining the Centre, she ran Paradis & Associates, a dispute resolution practice. Patricia has served as the Chair or Board Director on several boards, notably the Chair of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) National Board from 1995-1999. She is currently a Board Director with the Parkland Institute and the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre, incoming Chair (2019-2020) of the National Constitutional and Human Rights Section of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), and Vice –Chair of the National Alternate Dispute Resolution Section of the CBA. She is a recipient of a Life Time Achievement Award from LEAF  (2010) as well as a Women in Law Leadership Award (2018) for her work in the community.
